Vocal for Local: Session on Bridging Industry – Academia Gap – Way Forward

It was yet another exciting, informative, interesting, absorbing and engaging session from MVN University Igniting Minds Series.

The topic for Discussion/Deliberation was very apt and pertinent “Bridging Industry-Academia Gap- way Forward”.
A Galaxy of eminent speakers from HR, Entrepreneurship & Start Ups from India & Abroad spoke and shared their invaluable thoughts and experience thus making it very interesting and informative.

As Moderator, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Sadana, Professor- MVN University, of this important session of Industry Academia Interface it was indeed a wonderful experience.

MVN University and FMA organized a Virtual Panel Discussion on ” Bridging the Industry and Academia Gaps – Way Forward” on 29th September 2020 at 2 pm. The panel was chaired and welcome address given by Dr. Sanjay Kumar Sadana, Professor – SBMC, MVN University, and Mr. Abhay Kapoor, President FMA. This panel discussion consisted of distinguished panelist Ms. Phillipa Mathewson (Director – Tranaziam), Ms. Renu Bohra (CHRO, DB Schenker), Ms. Saloni Kaul (Founder – Its People), Ms. J Jayanthi (Founder – Peoplezenn) & Mr. Rakesh Seth (Chief HR – Reecosyss). The vote of thanks was given by Mr. V Thyagarajan, Executive Director. This event was initiated by Mr. Gaurav Saini, General Manager – CRC of MVN University who was convenor of the event.

The important point discussed were: There is a shortage of skilled manpower in the industry; on the other hand, there is a gross unemployment in technically trained manpower in certain areas. According to NASSCOM, each year over 3 million graduates and post-graduates are added to the Indian workforce.

Vice Chancellor of MVN University, Prof. (Dr.) J.V. Desai opined that their needs to be a strong linkage/bondage between industry and academia; knowledge and application for which detailed planning is needed.

It was opined that businesses propose to double and treble their workforces and India Inc. strives to maintain its position in the global marketplace, it has become imperative to prepare and plan for a world-class, competent, talented and innovative workforce.

Dr. Rajeev Ratan, Registrar- MVN University stated that it is essential to plan two tier teaching and learning processes in professional education for the 21st century to meet national and global standards.

Gaurav Saini, General Manager & Head- CRC- MVN University stressed on the role of the industry in helping the institutes in filling the gap as of equal importance since this alone will help to close the two ends. It is important to nurture a healthy industry-academia relationship to sustain the growth of the industry and enhance the contribution of academia.

The various eminent speakers of the panel discussed on the foremost need for companies to tie-up with academia is to access the fresh pool of talent. It is important for companies to be associated with educational institutions to ensure a steady inflow of qualified candidate at the entry-level. The industry-academia partnership primarily helps educational institutions to align their curricula with industry requirements. It also helps students by preparing them in advance to take the real-world challenges head on, as they join the corporate sector.

Dr. Sanjay Kumar Sadana, Senior Faculty- MVN University, stated that the gap between Industry and Academia should be plugged in a systematic manner. For this purpose, proper strategies, suitable planning and execution are needed as brought out by the various speakers in the panel. The soft skills and other skills required by a student so that the student is Industry ready and can be readily absorbed by Industry/Corporates.
The skill level of the students should also be continuously improved through new or instant courses conducted in the Universities/Institutes itself by Industry- Academia Partnership. Experts from Industry can be invited to impart necessary skills and share their wisdom and experience. Internships play a very important role where students get hands down experience of Industry/Corporate. A strong Industry Academia Linkage is the need of the day.
